If you are even so slightly interested in health and fitness, you must know the benefits of protein powder. I personally use whey protein for its benefits. Whey helps in weight loss and preserving muscles. When used alongside regular workouts, whey helps increase size and strength. Whey intake reduces hunger and consequently unhealthy snacking. Studies have also shown whey intake leads to improved immunity. The benefits of whey speak for themselves which is why I try as much as possible to ensure regular intake.

Problems

Knowing the role of whey in my dietary supplements, I make efforts to have it with me whenever I travel. However, as is with most supplements, travelling with protein powder can pose challenges. Firstly, depending on how long the trip will be I may have to pack a whole lot of it to last me through that duration.

Secondly, when using air travel mostly, supplements are treated with suspicion and it is a nightmare going through security. Thirdly, in situations where I have to buy protein powder abroad chances are it will be more expensive. Owing to the experience of travel, I have over time found helpful solutions to these problems.

Useful Recommendations

First let me state that I have heard many people offer suggestions that I found were not practical or useful. For example, for someone who habitually takes protein powder it is very hard to stop and instead opt to increase protein intake in food. This is especially hard when you travel and have to stay in hotels and eat out mostly. The following recommendations are those that I have tried and found to work.

First, when travelling you have to take into consideration the airline, airport security, and lastly customs officials. Most airlines do not have a problem with protein powders as they do not pose risks such as fire. However, it is always better to call an airline in advance and enquire on their policy. This way you can make informed choices on whether to pack your protein powder in your carry on or checked luggage. I find that it is easier to have my supplements in the checked luggage especially when it is bulky.

When it comes to airport security it is important to keep in mind that they are being extra cautious. Where possible pack the protein powder in its original packaging to reduce suspicion. This is especially helpful if you are travelling for longer periods and may require up to an entire tub or more. For shorter trips it is impractical to carry an entire tub of protein powder therefore there will obviously be need to repack.

Helpful Tips

A useful tip is to repack into Ziploc bags and label it. Where possible use the original label from the product. Custom officials work with the law of a specific country. There are countries that have very strict laws on importation of substances that they deem illegal. When travelling to a country whose laws you are not conversant with I recommend calling the embassy in advance to find out the specific laws that may pose challenges.

Even in countries where protein powders are not illegal, the amount you pack may be problematic. Having a year’s supply of supplements for a one week stay will make it look like you intend to resell which may be illegal. Therefore pack only what you will need for the duration of your stay.

In situations where your trip will be a long one, you may be forced to buy protein powder abroad. It is very important that you ensure the product you buy is original as some knockoffs may be bad for your health. I find it easier to buy whey protein from Amazon (after looking it up on The Protein Investor) and pay the shipping fees as it guarantees quality every time. Alternatively, you can find out from the company manufacturing the protein powder about their authorized sellers in the country you travel to.

Lastly, while repacking into Ziploc bags I recommend double packing to prevent tears. Spilled protein powder is wasted and may stain clothes. While Ziploc bags work just fine I sometimes find them flimsy even when double packed. I recommend using Pack-It Compression Sacs as they are sturdy and spacious and guarantee no tears.
